The Benefits of Meditation

The benefits of meditation are truly remarkable.  This includes benefits to your health and your physiological well being.  Meditation also provides spiritual benefits as you gain a greater understanding of the universe.  Don’t be misled to believe that since meditation requires no expensive items, that the benefits are not all-encompassing.  At the root of meditation is the silencing of your mind so your body can heal and you can reflect.  You turn off the confusion and stress of the everyday activities to recharge yourself.  Just a short meditation everyday will relieve your stress and allow your body to rid itself of the toxins stress induces.  Once you are able to decrease your stress through mediation this will decrease your chances of getting heart disease.  Studies have also shown that meditation has been able to eliminate or decrease the pain that is associated with certain types of illnesses.

Assuming a proper meditative pose allows you to decrease your oxygen consumption and increases your blood flow, while at the same time slows your heart rate.  It can help decrease muscle tension and relax your nervous system.  Daily meditation can also help with weight loss, as you will have more energy to exercise more, and have the mental control to eat less.  If you are someone who suffers from anxiety this can be overcome by stilling your mind and putting things into perspective so you don’t have to feel the panic attacks you once suffered.

By controlling your thoughts and improving your focus and concentration you will find your ability to learn and work at your job improves.  Meditation will also improve your creativity as you learn to work with both your right and left sides of the brain.  Your productivity will increase as you find it easier to work longer without distraction.  If you deal with complex problems in your job you will find these items much easier to resolve as you are training your brain everyday.  As I’m sure you are aware sometimes answers to problems come when you are not even thinking about the problem.  This is evidence that when your mind is clear and empty it resolves issues that you aren’t even thinking about.  Thus your ability to rest your mind will provide optimal results in whatever you are doing.

In addition to the health benefits associated with mediation many people meditate for spiritual reasons.  This allows people to have an inner peace and understanding of the universe.  Things are put into perspective and one obtains a wisdom that they would otherwise not have.  People meditate to try to understand their purpose for living.  One can gain greater compassion for others through meditation as one grows in harmony with human conscienceless.   For some the goal is enlightenment.  This is an objective that takes many years of study and practice.  Generally one seeking enlightenment will study under the supervision of a spiritual teacher to guide them and let them seek their goal faster than if they tried to do it on their own.

No matter what your reason for meditation the benefits are countless.  You may even start meditation with certain goals in mind and then later realize gains that you were not even looking for.  Meditation is for young people, middle-aged people and senior citizens.  Once you get started and begin seeing the results of meditation you will wonder why you didn’t start meditating much sooner.
