Chakras and Meditation

If you are starting to learn about meditation then you will have probably heard the term chakra by now.  However, do you even know what this means? For some this can be a source of confusion, and understandably so.  Some cultures have different interpretations of what a Chakra is and how it is related to the life energy of the body.  For the Taoist practitioners these energy forces are focused into cortexes where the energy is concentrated.  For the western alchemists chakras were used in a complex system involving planets and various metals.

It is widely accepted by many who practice mediation that there are at least 16 different Chakras which each one corresponding to a particular part of the body.

The first chakra is also known as the base chakra. This is located at the base of the spine. This location relates heavily to the adrenals, large intestine and the rectum. Since this is the base chakra this is where the life energy is mostly focused.

The second chakra is focused around the naval. While some cultures do not specifically locate this chakra at exactly the naval many however do. Known as the sacral chakra this is where all of the sensuality and sexuality comes from.

The third chakra is the solar plexus chakra. Related to the spleen, intestines and the stomach physically this chakra is where all of our emotions are stored. The ideals of self respect come from this chakra. Any pent up bad emotions will be dealt with when we become aware of how to use this chakra.

The fourth chakra is the heart chakra. This chakra is related to the thymus, heart and the chest. Love of others and of self is what this chakra governs. By tapping into this chakra we can get a better sense of self and self worth.

The fifth chakra is the throat chakra. This is related to the throat and is also carries the responsibility to speak the truth about others and of ourselves. Improving on this chakra will allow for more truthful speech and to eliminate any lying behavior we may have done in our past.

The sixth chakra is the brow chakra or the third eye. This is located just above our eye brows in the center of our forehead. This chakra is responsible for articulating our vision and our future goals. Clearly this chakra is really helpful if we are goal oriented and want to obtain a better lifestyle.

The seventh chakra is crown chakra. Located at the top of our head it is perhaps one of the most important chakras. This relates heavily to our spiritual awareness and is our direct connection to spirit and higher states of consciousness.

The remaining chakras 8 to 16 are coming back into practice for many who perform meditation daily. These chakras were only recently rediscovered. While many may believe that these chakras should not be seriously considered there is a definite push to have them as part of the mainstream. As more and more people continue to practice this form of spiritual awakening a better understanding is coming into the light. Only time will tell what the future holds for us all.
