Learn to Meditate

The hardest part about learning to meditate is getting started.  Learning to meditate is a rewarding experience so by following the steps below you will be rewarding yourself.  Once people understand the many benefits of meditation and commit to meditating it is actually a very easy process.  As a total beginner to meditation there are several things you can do to maximize your experience.  The first thing you must do is commit in your mind that you will make time every day to meditate.  Next you should choose a quiet private spot to meditate where you won’t be distracted.  It is important to get into a routine and with a little practice it will become habit and you won’t even have to think about it.

Before starting to meditate make sure you are clean.  This may mean you simply wash your hands or if you prefer bath or take a shower.  This will put you in the mood as you first clean your body preparing yourself to then clean your mind.  Meditation is a purifying process that cleans your whole being.  Make sure you have light comfortable clothes.  You will be sitting for a period of time and thus you should try to wear something as comfortable as possible.

You should sit crossed legged on a mat, pillow, or even the floor if you find it comfortable.  Close your eyes and try to relax your body the best you can.  Take several deep breaths to calm yourself even further.  At this point you will find your mind racing with thoughts ranging from what you did yesterday to what you have to do today and in the future.  The goal is to silence those thoughts one by one.  Some teachers will then say think of nothing.  Since you have probably never tried to think of “nothing” it may be rather hard.

It may be easier for some people to focus on a chakra on their body instead of just trying to think of nothing.  One way to start is to focus on your root chakra which is located at the base of the spine.  Imagine the energy of the chakra and feel the energy pulsing through your body.  As random thoughts enter your mind try quietly push them away and regain your focus.  The goal is to allow your subconscious to take over and not let your mind race with thoughts.  Try to maintain your posture in your back keeping it as straight as possible.  This will allow the energy to flow from the base of your body up and around your whole body.

You should set a timer and start by meditating just 5 minutes a day to start.  After a week of doing that consistently you are ready to increase the amount of time you meditate.  It is a mistake to try to meditate for longer periods of time initially.  Your mind and body must adjust to your new activity.  Just as a runner can’t start off by running 5 miles the first time they run you shouldn’t try to do a marathon meditation session as you won’t reap the benefits.

As you learn to still your mind and feel the energy recharging your body you will wonder how you ever lived without meditating every day.  It is an awaking experience that can be enjoyed the rest of your life.  Once you see the benefits be sure to spread the word to others.  We are all connected in the universe and it will help you to share good energy with others.
