Many people want to know what the best meditation is. The short answer is any meditation. It is better to do any type or form of meditation than none at all. With that being said there are certainly best practices of meditation that will enhance your experience. When you are just getting started with meditation, consistency is very important so you can get in a routine. Keep in mind that meditation should be enjoyed, and it should never become a chore.
There is no one “best meditation” for everyone. Mediation is an individual experience and thus it is highly personalized. What is best for one person may not be best for another. Certain people may meditate for inner peace, while others relaxation, while others for spiritual reasons who may be seeking enlightenment.
Many people like to start off their day with a morning meditation to get them focused and energized for the day. This is not better or worse than someone who prefers to meditate at night or in the afternoon. It is an individual choice, and thus there is no right or wrong or best time. Since meditation requires a quiet peaceful atmosphere if you can find a time where you will not be disturbed you will see the benefits.
The best meditation will come with many hours of practice. Each individual must find out what works best for them. Some people are able to learn and practice by themselves and do so quite successfully. Others must find a teacher to guide them and help them advance. There is no need for a fancy mat or cushion but as one progresses in the duration of mediation they may find it more comfortable to use one.
Many people wonder if there is a best music to meditate to. Again this is an individual choice and only through trial and error will you understand what you like and what helps you get in the proper state. Buddhist monks don’t meditate with music, so we can’t assume it is best to meditate with music. At the same time most westerners don’t have the luxury of meditating in silence in a monastery like monks do, so using music to block out the outside world may be a good thing in the absence of a quiet safe place.
There is no evidence that chanting while meditating is better than meditation in silence. But as previously mentioned if it helps and individual focus chanting should be used by that individual. The same goes for people who like to meditate in front of a candle. They believe that the energy and light of the candle enhances their experience. If they believe it helps them it probably does, as what you believe in greatly effects the outcome.
There is no reason to be hesitant to meditate because you think you might be doing it wrong. Give it a try and see for yourself. Don’t become frustrated, as with everything else in life you are not going to be perfect the first time you do something. Good meditations will come with practice and time.
